My #1 House Rule That Changed The Way We Make Decisions – That Works For Recruitment Too..

There’s a simple rule in my house now:
No decisions are made from the bed or the couch.

Sounds a bit extreme, maybe. But let me explain.

It all started with my 10 year old son. He’s an energetic, outdoor-loving, rough-and-tumble kind of kid. He loves the beach. Loves swimming in the pool. Loves kicking the footy. Loves walking the dogs.

But ask him first thing in the morning while he’s curled up in a doona-burrito on the couch?

“Nah.”

Want to jump in the pool?

“Nah.”

Want to do one of the 1000 things you love to do?

Still, “Nah.”

Cue the dad battle. I’d insist. He’d drag his feet. We’d get out the door and then suddenly he’s buzzing. Happy, running around, full of life. The same stuff that felt “too hard” from the couch? Now it’s the best part of his day.

Guess What? We Adults Do the Same Thing

It hit me:

We all do this.

How many times have you set your alarm for 6am, promising yourself you’ll hit the gym… only to wake up, roll over, and hit snooze?

You had:

  • The intention
  • The desire
  • The plan

But your state – your physical and mental energy – said otherwise.

Your State Shapes Your Decisions

When you’re horizontal, comfortable, half-asleep or deep in your doona, you’re not in the mindset to make decisions. You’re in survival mode, not growth mode.

That lazy energy state? It clouds your judgement.

Sit down on the couch and try to get up the motivation to:

  • Smash out 10 BD calls
  • Send that tricky email
  • Follow up with that flaky client

Suddenly, everything feels harder.
Everything feels further away.

What Tony Robbins Gets Right

Tony Robbins says:

“Your state creates your decisions.”

And if your decisions shape your destiny, well… lying in bed negotiating with yourself is not where great destinies are made.

He’s big on the idea of being “in state” – that physical, emotional, and mental sweet spot where you’re energised, engaged, alert.

When your body is activated, your mind follows.

You:

  • Stand taller
  • Think sharper
  • Make bolder calls

But when you’re flat, slow, and slouched?
You hesitate. You second-guess. You shrink.

Lazy Energy = Lazy Decisions

This isn’t just about recruiting. This is life.

Think about it:

  • That moment you almost didn’t go for the interview
  • The job you didn’t apply for because you felt “meh”
  • The deal you let slide
  • The conversation you avoided

How many of those moments were decided from the couch?

The Fix: Change Your State First

Here’s a challenge for you:

Stand up before you decide. Move before you choose. Do some star jumps, push-ups or something. Get your body into a higher state before you say yes or no.

Your energy is everything.

Here are some quick state-changers:

  • The gym
  • An ice bath (you’ll know you’re awake)
  • Sunshine and fresh air
  • A short walk
  • A mantra
  • Blasting a song that gets you fired up

Whatever works for you, just freaking do it.
Because once you’re up and activated, everything becomes more possible.

Don’t Let the Doona Decide

However much you might want to (and I KNOW how tempting it is), don’t let the warmth and comfiness of that doona win. You’re not lazy. You’re just flat. And the best part? That’s fixable.

So remember this next time you’re half under the doona about to make a call on your day, your week, your business, or even your life:

Don’t make decisions from bed.

They’ll almost always be smaller than you’re capable of.
